An interesting concept and an often-forgotten idea for small but expanding businesses, is a double story office building. Has your business or project got to that stage where it’s in need of more office space for your lifeline – your team? If yes, then that’s good, and we’re here to help. It means your business is growing and heading in the right direction, but it also means you may need to consider expanding your office space to cater for your team.

So you’ve got to that stage where you need to expand, and you’ve got two options, expand out or up. If you’re lucky enough to have plenty of outdoor room around your office, then it’s likely you’ll probably go out and expand onto the surrounding land. But if you’re wanting to do something that little bit different, or are in a very confined space and don’t have the option to expand out, then the ultimate solution is to turn your office into a double or multi story office space.

Here's three top advantages of taking your office space ‘up a level’ literally:

  1. Cost Benefit

If you’re decided on expanding out rather than up, it’s going require land space to make it work. This land will come from two places, available land that your office is already on, or by purchasing more land in surrounding blocks. If you choose to buy land, it’s going to be a massive cost your business has to incur, on top of the actual office building expansion itself. If you build upwards, no land is taken up in the process, and costs are kept much lower.

        2. Views & Light

As with everything, increased height means better views and more natural light. And lets be honest, who doesn’t want these two things in their business office. By extending your office upwards instead of outwards, it means that the views from the top level of your office are going to be far more than if your office was on ground level. It will also mean more natural light can flood into your office space and make for a light-filled, ambient space, the perfect space to encourage and stimulate quality work.

        3. Layout Benefits

By adding a level to your office means it can act as a clear line to separate different office spaces. Think lunch rooms and amenities vs offices, or board rooms vs main office. Having more than one level to work from means that it can act as a clean division for different office spaces, and create a better flow and more efficient office.

So if your approaching or thinking about your business’s office growth needs, it may be a good idea to analyse whether extending upwards or outwards is more beneficial and sustainable for your business, its performance and its team.
